Band Members (and the instrument they play):

KA Antonio
Aaron Caligner
JL de las Llagas
Jon Pinto

Biography:

The original members of the band are all from DLSU POPS ORCHESTRA, now Surreli Pops Orchestra. They started playing together in the orchestra, became friends, and jammed together a lot. Until in 2008, the band took interest in joining a battle of the bands competition sponsored by UP Diliman. They were required to submit an original song. Fortunately, the song came out to be successful and it became the main reason of the “making of the band”. Unfortunately, we had to switch drummers, and with heaven’s goodness, we were given Jon Pinto(also a pops orchestra member) who’s been really amazing since he joined us last 2009!To this day, the band officially has 6 original songs.

How did you coin your Band’s name? OR What lead your group to name your Band name as it is today?

It’s actually a combination of the band members 'name…after coming out with the most serious to the funniest names. Ended up to be ajka. We figured it sounded cool and unique, plus it has a recall! When we researched for that name over the internet, we found out that it’s a name of a town in hungary.

Describe your music style.

A mix of pop-rock and anything we find fun to play from classical to funk to jazz.

Who do you think your music talks to (i.e. to what audience, genre)? What message do you want to tell your audience about your music?

Basically ajka’s music just wants to show how passionate and happy we are with what we’re doing. We just keep making music, try our best to sound as unique as possible.  We want to tell our audience that you don’t always need to stick to a single genre, sometimes the artistry is enhanced when you put things together. Hindi lahat ng maganda palaging magkakatugma!

We just want to tell our audience that there really are a lot of kinds of music, and they’re all good!:)

Who are the artists / music icons that influenced your style of music? In what way have these music icons inspired your group?

Barbie’s cradle – we just love every bit of their music. It’s very pinoy plus the messages of their songs are very straight forward. Barbie’s music is just really happy.
Sinosikat – ultimate pinoy funk. They sound is really unique, and their vibe is overwhelming! Ramdam mo sila talaga.
DMB – they play around with their music so much and it makes their sound so unique. We love how they put different things together and still end up really well.
Jeff Buckley – his music is full of emotions.
Salindiwa - very brave with their choice of music

Others: alannis, Diana rising

Where there any experiences / events in each of your lives that have made an impact in your musical sense of style?

We think that being part of DLSU Pops Orchestra for years has contributed a lot in our sense of style. The organization taught us how to appreciate different kinds of music, not only appreciate, but play those genres, and live with it as well!

Music sounds better with coffee

The wailing guitars, the smashing of drums and melodic chants: They all come together in one glorious wall of rhythmic harmony. But sometimes, passion takes a back seat if you need to rest your body and mind. Well, people will know if the band is not playing at a 100%. Now that’s where coffee comes into play. Research has shown that coffee improves mental and physical alertness. It helps keep you awake especially if youуre playing at late hours. Coffee also stimulates your mind, which may help in songwriting. So the next time you and your buds are giving it all for music, be sure to give a little back to your physical and mental health.

After all, a sound mind and a sound body, sounds cool.
